Cystic Fibrosis

Summary: An overview of cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease of the lungs and digestive system; it includes the degree to which the disease affects those who are afflicted with it, and the treatments used. One thousand new cases are diagnosed in the United States each year, and an estimated ten million Americans carry the defective gene for this disease.
Cystic Fibrosis is a Genetic disease affecting around thirty thousand adults and children in the United Stated, 1,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. At least 10 million Americans carry the defective gene for Cystic fibrosis; there are more than 1,000 mutations of this gene. Cystic Fibrosis affects mainly the lungs and digestive system in children and young adults. In the first year of life 60% of patients are diagnosed and 90% by age 10.

In the early 1980's scientists started looking for the cause of cystic fibrosis. After a lot of hard work the scientist finally started to isolate the gene and find what mutations caused the gene. In the 1940's doctors realized that people with cystic fibrosis had clogged ductual systems with thick mucus.
