The central character in Alan Paton's book, Cry, The Beloved Country, the Reverend Stephen Kumalo, exemplifies a supreme level of optimism and positive regard toward others. His unwavering determination and perseverance influenced those who had not made wise choices or followed the appropriate paths for their lives. Kumalo's efforts of encouragement to others and his willingness to make personal sacrifices enabled individuals to turn their lives around for the better. Kumalo touched many troubled people including his sister Gertrude, his son Absalom, and the young lady who was pregnant with his son's child.
