Summary:
Summarizes part I of the novel Maniac Magee, by Jerry Spinelli.
Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli is about an itinerant boy named Maniac whose parents died in a trolley crash. So little old Maniac had to go live with his Aunt Dot and Uncle Dan. His name wasn't really Maniac, people just called him that. His real name was Jeffrey Lionel Magee
Poor little Maniac had to go to live with his Aunt and Uncle. "But what's wrong with living with his Aunt and Uncle? Did they, let loose colossal lions and bears on him while he was sleeping" you ask. Well, I'll tell you why. His Aunt and uncle loathed each other! They however, being strict Catholics divorce was not an option. Lines were permanently drawn and conversation ceased. Everything was duplicated two toasters, two TVs, two refrigerators, two everything! Maniac couldn't handle the situation and longer. At Maniac's school spring concert his classmates and he were singing a song, "Talk to the Animals", Maniac started screaming and kept on screaming until after the screaming he pointed to his Aunt and Uncle and said, "Talk! Talk! Talk! Will Ya Talk! Talk! Talk! And then he ran. He ran out of the school as fast as he could.
Everybody knows that Maniac started in Hollidaysburg and ended up in Two Mills. But the query was, "What took his so long"? Another question was, "Why here? Why Two Mills"" There are only rumors.
Maniac's first appearance in Two Mills was to a girl named Amanda. He noticed that she was carrying a suitcase, and thought she was running away too. He went over and found out she wasn't running away. She was just going to school and that her suitcase was full of books. Her little brother and little sister loved to color everything in view. And she kept all her books safe with her at all times. Maniac asked to borrow a book and Amanda reluctantly gave him one. The other appearances in Two Mills were noticed when he caught a football, saved a boy from Fisterwald's backyard, when he arrived uninvited at a house for dinner, and even when he bunted a frog! A gang of boys started to pursue him, and they ripped one of Amanda's book pages! When he gave the book back to Amanda, Mars (the person who ripped her book) said he didn't rip it but in the end Amanda and Maniac won. Then Amanda invited Maniac to come over to her house and then finding out he was homeless he started to live with them. One day at Cobble's Pizza Parlor Maniac took a challenge at Cobble's Knot. He won, getting a life time supply of pizza. One day in summer, at a pool party Maniac was spoken to by a ragpicker who told him to go back to his own kind. Maniac was confused. The next day there was writing on their front steps. It read "FISHBELLY GO HOME." Maniac just didn't feel right. Sadly, he left Amanda and her family. But, the strange thing about this was that when he left he didn't run he walked, walked on the center of the streets Hector and Birch through the middle of Two Mills.
