Life in Egypt developed around the Nile River. The Nile River not only gave people freshwater and an easy route to travel along but also, after flooding each year, it left behind rich, fertile soil which was very helpful for planting crops.
At one time Egypt was two separate countries; Upper and Lower Egypt. About 5,000 years ago; around 3000 BC the two separate countries were joined under one ruler named King Menes. Egypt was one of the richest and most powerful countries
in the world, from that time on until 30 BC, almost 3,000 years later.
