Rate of Reaction

Summary: Examines the rate of reaction between calcium carbonate and hydrochloric acid. Details an experiment investigating how the concentration affects the rate of reaction.
Aim

The aim of this investigation is to determine how different concentrations of hydrochloric acid will affect the rate of reaction of calcium carbonate to produce carbon dioxide gas.

Prediction

My prediction for the experiment is that the higher the concentration, the faster the rate of reaction and the lower the concentration, the slower the rate of reaction. This is because in a more concentrated solution, the more acid particles present, therefore more collisions would occur between the acid and the calcium carbonate. As a result a higher amount of carbon dioxide would be produced at a much faster rate.

The variable I will keep constant is the amount of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) used, and the variable I will vary is the concentration of hydrochloric acid (Hcl) used. This will ensure the reliability of my results as the effect of different concentrations used will only be measured with...
