Why I Want to be a Pediatric Nurse
The health field is a field in which you are almost always guaranteed a job. There is such a need for health professionals that the United States is even allowing people from Mexico and Canada to come in and take these jobs. Nursing is one of the jobs that is in need of many people, especially pediatric nursing. The rewards of being a pediatric nurse are not only material wise as some say, but also beneficial to the person's soul.
I would love to be a pediatric nurse because you are always on your feet and there is always something different to do. This is true especially with infants. Infants can be tough to take care of but I enjoy children, so I know I will like the job. Because of the fact that there are many children in the hospital, you never have to sit around and feel as if you are wasting your day. My friend works at Christus Spohn Hospital and she is never without something to do. She takes care of the children after surgery was performed on them, administers feeding tubes to children, gives shots to children, and is always by their side. Also, many people call the trauma phone all day long, so even if you are not literally on your feet, you are still working and helping people in need. Every single day there is something that you have to do, and everyday it can be different.
While working at a hospital, you never know what is going to happen that day. Some children are not aware of the same dangers that adults are aware of, so they are more apt to get hurt by things unlike someone with more knowledge. A child can come in with a minor cut to third degree burns, and as a nurse you have to be prepared for the inevitable. This would be a wonderful challenge on what knowledge I retained from high school, college, and medical school. My current doctor was training in New York and he had to administer a procedure that he had learned two years ago. He was very fortunate to have remembered the procedure exactly, unlike some of his other peers. With so much to do I would never get bored of being a pediatric nurse, and I would never feel like my life was meaningless in any aspect.
To be a pediatric nurse means that I would have such a great feeling of accomplishment. Not only in the work place, but also in life in general. Everyday I would be helping sick children, children in pain, and even suffering children get well. Although some would not be able to be cured, I can still try to give them happiness. As long as I could make them smile and get their minds off of the pain, it would be an accomplishment in itself. It is a life changing experience, as some say. For example, one man's child was sick with a rare heart disease and as a result he had to go to many different hospitals in search for a cure. Although no cure was ever found and his son ended up dying, he said he would always remember how caring and amiable the nurses were to his son. He said that he would dedicate his life to helping children, and he would always remember to treat every child as the nurses had treated his son. He has accomplished his goal by becoming a nurse, and he has treated his patients as he said he would. Even though he had to go through the hard experience of losing his son, he was able to change his life in a better way.
Being a pediatric nurse would be a great life experience that I would be able to do everyday. Some people say that they get paid a big salary but are not in it for the money, but for the children. People make different salaries being a pediatric nurse, but no matter how much money they make, I would not be in it for that reason. I will get more out of life by helping children in need by doing what is in their best interest, rather than me doing what is in my best interest.
