There are an estimated twenty seven million people enslaved in the world today, more than there has ever been in the world at any one time. For many people when they hear the word slavery, their mind goes back to pre-American Civil War slavery.

The reality is that modern slavery is still an enormous problem in the world today, even in the United States. Every ten minutes a woman or child is trafficked into the United States annually as sex, domestic, garment, and agricultural slaves.

Slavery is defined as work done without any compensation under the threat of violence. Major forms of modern-day slavery include debt bondage, forced labor, slavery by descent,forced prostitution, and chattel slavery.
