A Separate Peace, written by John Knowles, tells the story of two boys at a boarding school and how they discover their true selves. Throughout the book, many themes become apparent, one being the theme of Finny and his unrelenting friendship.

John Knowles' theme of Finny and friendship is that Finny's friendliness comes naturally to him which makes his friendship with Gene a true friendship from and for Finny, but Gene isn't able to fully return the friendship. This theme shows how, because of his natural friendliness, Finny doesn't always see how he affects others or how others respond to him. This happens after Gene jounces the tree limb he and Finny are standing on which causes Finny to fall and severely break his leg.
