Homelessness

Summary: Explores the causes and effects of homelessness. Questions who should be held responsible for the problem. Describes how the current system has created a subculture of the disenfranchised homeless which continues to be reinforced.
Despite the efforts of various non-profit organizations and promises by politicians to help eradicate homelessness, it remains a problem that has virtually not gone away. Who should be held responsible? Ultimately, the homeless are responsible, but as different situations are created, the problem becomes much more complex. People who become disabled for example, often times have no where to go -except the streets. State mental hospitals throughout Florida were recently shut down -most likely due to lack of funding, and this too left many handicap people without a home. Many cases as well, are those involving drug addicts who weren't able to get back on their feet (often times when a rehabilitation centre is shut down). Sadly, many commonly proposed "solutions" focus on short-term quick fixes rather than focusing on proactive approaches to preventing homelessness in the first place.
