Advertising and Media Manipulation

Summary:   Discusses the advertising industry and the techniques companies use to get and keep the viewers attention. Examines whether some of the techniques used constitute manipulation.


The media portrays advertisements in a way that makes us want to buy a particular product, or keeps us interested enough to want to find out more information on the product being sold. Many ads are trying to attach themselves to our unsatisfied desires to be beautiful, wealthy or successful.

Everyone has an opinion or an attitude towards a topic, of what they want to hear and what they don't want to hear, for example a person who eats a lot of take-away, would prefer not to hear about the high cholesterol or high blood pressure that comes with it. We block out these negative thoughts and replace them with positive images because it makes us feel more comfortable with ourselves.
