Summary: Investigates the Islamic extremist movement and its detrimental effect on the view those in the West have of the Islamic religion as a whole. Also examines the differences between moderate and fundamentalist Muslims.
Throughout history, conflict between religions has been inevitable. In particular, there has always been a degree conflict between the Islamic world and the Christian western world. Recently, social, political and religious circumstances in Islamic countries have given rise to a number of fundamentalist and extremist groups, accelerating the conflict to the stage of war in 2003.

"Extreme Islamic revival movements thrive in those places that have the least developed and open politics and the worst economic conditions." In times of hardship and poverty, as Silverman (2000) investigates, it is often found that people are more likely to resort to radical or even extremist movements in a hope of ending their troubles. Lately in the Middle East, partly due to the current social conditions, there has been an increase in the number of fundamentalist and extremist movements. People in Islamic countries have suffered poverty in the face of their political freedom...
