Julius Caesar: Comparison of the Speeches by Antony and Brutus

Summary:   Compares and evaluates speeches given by Brutus and Mark Antony at Caesar's funeral in Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar. Discusses how each speech influences the crowd and examines the rhetoric used in each.


William Shakespeare was born in Stratford upon Avon in 1564, and he wrote Julius Caesar in 1599. This was his first of three roman history plays.

Julius Caesar was returning to Rome following the death of Pompey. The commoners left their workplaces and gathered in the streets to celebrate the return of the great Caesar to Rome, but the roman tribunes are concerned about Caesars growing power. Flavius and Murellus the roman tribunes are on trying to get everybody back to work, and trying to break up the party to rejoice Caesars triumph. Caesar returns to Rome awaited by cheering fans, delighted to see the mighty Caesar. As Caesar is walking through the crowds of people a soothsayer calls out to him, and warns Caesar to "beware the ides of March" Usually Caesar is a very superstitious.....
