An Inspector Calls - Character Details

Summary: Reviews the novel An Inspector Calls, by JB Priestley. Provides details on the characters of Eric, Gerald and Eva. Includes supporting evidence from the book.
The Character of Eva Smith

· She was very lonely and didn't have that many friends in the town. Because of this, she usually went to the Palace bar and was molested by womanisers.

· She was young, pretty and warm-hearted. This is shown when she doesn't want to take anymore money from Eric because she knows he is stealing it from the office in which he works.

· She kept a rough sort of diary. This diary was used by the inspector to find out information and bluff the Birlings into telling more.

· Not a typical woman of the town. She was very mature and wasn't a prostitute like the others.

· Doesn't try to rob Gerald as she knows that he can't afford to give her money. Because of this she lives economically on what he gave her.

· She was very gallant about ending the affair, but she knew it was the only good thing she will ever have in her life and decided to move out of Brumley 2 months later to `make it last longer'.

The Character of Gerald

· Gerald is a typical womaniser but doesn't tell many people. This is shown when he tells us that he was in the Palace bar. If he knew that there were `women of the town' there, why did he want to go"

· Also because he let her live in a friend's house for a while and gave her money, it made him look like a hero. But if he was a hero why not help one of the less attractive women who wouldn't be able to make her own way.

· He was not very committed to Sheila as he cheated on her. He also lied when he said he was `busy at the works'. He was really going to spend time with Eva

The Character of Eric

· Eric is an alcoholic. Whenever he is in a tense position is he asks if he can get a glass of port. Also when he took Eva to her lodge, he was so drunk that he forced himself on to her.

· Eric is also a womaniser as he was also at the Palace bar where he met Eva again.

· He acts childish even though he is over 18.

· Everyone treats him as a child (e.g Eva) and he thinks that maturity comes with age.
