Examining the Use of Personal Computers on Society?
Summary:
Discusses the growing dependence upon personal computers. Considers if society has grown too dependent upon computers. Analyzes what long term effect computers have had upon society.
Computers have had a very powerful effect on society, both good and bad. People have come a very long way with computers; we've discovered how they can help us live our life longer, thanks to computer assisted medical advances, and more enjoyably thanks to the empowering knowledge computers are able to share. However, with everything good that comes, must also come some harm, and computers are a prime example of that. The next paragraphs will explore the many ways computers have helped-and harmed- us.
The computer has given us access to countless sources of knowledge; the whole world has literally opened up to us. We are able to explore the daily life in a foreign country with the click of a mouse, something that was thought impossible fifty years ago. The happenings of the world are right at our fingertips; we can find out what's happening on the war in Afghanistan, then perhaps instant message our friends and ask them what's happening with the latest gossip. However, some people may feel that so much information is overwhelming and unnecessary; it can create more anxiety and worry for them.
As I mentioned above, with everything good that comes, must also come some harm. Today's society is often too caught up in their careers and goals to enjoy many of the finer points in life, such as nature and their family lives. Children are taught at an early age to rely on computers for stimulation and entertainment; many children would rather watch TV or play video games than play sports or go outside. This has attributed directly to the growing obesity rates in North America and all over the world. There has been a staggering increase in child obesity rates, a problem which I think computers are partially responsible for. On the other hand, computers can provide much knowledge of these problems and can help families solve them.
The environment has definitely been impacted by computers in our society, both positively and negatively. Radiation from computers has harmed plants and animals for centuries. Wildlife habitats have been destroyed from computer factories and radio towers. The growing computer industry has definitely had a negative effect on the environment. There are also good effects on the environment from computers; there is more information accessible to the public on how to preserve and save it. Greenpeace and the World Wildlife Foundation are both widely spread on the Internet.
In conclusion, I think that computers have done more good than harm in our society; they save us a lot of time in our daily routines, they give us very accurate and timely information. They have given us the inspiration and motivation to advance our lives and help us to live them to the fullest.
