Louis XIV, The Sun King

Summary:   Discusses the reign of French King Louis XIV, also called the Sun King. Includes information on his government, the building of Versailles, and his economic downfall.


France was an absoulte monarchy ruled by Louis the XIV that was assisted by Colbert. It was an absolutist state, meaning that the authority of France was only the King's and no one else's. Colbert used an economic system that relied on a favorable balance of trade, to try and stabalize the French economy. During Louis's reign, the king succsessfully centralized government at Versailles, while also successfully bankrupting all of France. In this paper, I will discuss the factors of his rule, the revokation of the Edict of Nantes, and the palace Versailles.

Louis XIV decided to rule by himself during his entire reign when one of his advisers named Mazarin. Ruled with the help of ministers and intendants who depended on the king. He surrounded himself with the ministers he controlled and excluded the nobility from.....
