The Importance of American Nationalism

Summary:   Discusses the importance of nationalism and patriotism in 21st century America.

With its bright colors and proud stars, the American flag flies high over the spot where the trade centers fell five months before. This flag represents all of the brave men and women of our country who died in order to protect millions of American lives.

America is a place of patriotism, a place of bravery and a place where there is no shame in stating your ethnicity, your religious beliefs, or your personal beliefs. America is a place where people all over the world come to relieve off of their families the political and economical strains of their home countries.

When immigrants first arrive through Ellis Island, the first thing they see is not only a national landmark, but also an American symbol. The Statue of Liberty stands tall to greet the new and promising Americans and welcome them into a new home. This statue represents not only American liberty, but also American pride and freedom; it represents the fearlessness of our great leaders who guide us through good times and bad. But most of all, this statue represents the unity of the American people who will remain tall and strong just as this statue has for so many years.

So you ask, "What is it that makes America a great place to live"" Well I know all the answers to that question. Those answers lie in the faces and spirits of all those around you. They lie in the homeless man down on the corner who says to himself everyday "I am proud to be an American." They lie in the tall city buildings, and the small country homes, all built by Americans. These answers you are looking for rest on the shoulders of every American citizen.

"Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans -- born in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by a hard and bitter peace." - John F. Kennedy. It's true; the American people have been raised in peace. Perhaps this is one of the things that make living in America so great. Or perhaps it's in the freedom of speech and religion. It could be that there are no laws dictating our day-to-day routine. Well I believe that it is all of these things that make America great. I believe that there is so much more to be said, but not enough words to describe the freedom, integrity, and boldness of our great country.
