Van Halen - A Band's Evolution

Summary:   Considers how the loss of an original band member affected the American rock band Van Halen. Discusses how the band's musical style changed after the loss of their lead singer David Lee Roth.

The qualities of one man can not be replaced with another man's. Look at the 80's most famous and infamous rock and roll band, Van Halen. Van Halen was a popular band with an exciting front man David Lee Roth or DLR. The band seemed to have every thing going right for them. DLR just helped the band release their most popular album 1984 in the year 1984. But with out any warning DLR was released from the popular rock band and was replaced with a much less exciting more laid back front man, of Sammy Hagar. After this move many Van Halen fans jumped off of the band wagon in light of the recent loss of DLR. Much to everyone's surprise Van Halen sold even more albums and also released more albums with Sammy, however Van Halen wasn't the same band. Van Halen lost their rock and roll luster and this luster was replaced with sappy love songs and the famous Eddie Van Halen guitar shredding was replaced with the keyboards. After ten years of success with the band Sammy was released also and then replaced with another singer, Gary Charone who released one album with Van Halen which bombed.

Looking at Van Halen it proves that you can not replace a man, who has their own personal character and hope to get the same product. Van Halen proves that every man is created different. No one could replace DLR because DLR had his own distinct style and character.

Most original Van Halen fans realized this fact and thus jumped off the band wagon knowing the band would never be the same. When Sammy sung DLR's songs they just weren't the same, it sounded like a cover band. Even though the Sammy Hagar era was very successful this era was nothing like the DLR era. The other band members of Van Halen did not realize that by changing one band member their whole style would have changed. That is the most likely reason why they released Sammy Hagar in 1994. But yet adding a new singer would yet change Van Halen's style again. This fact remained true and all of the Van Hagar fans now jumped off the band wagon. No one wanted to listen to an old washed up band and too many fans realized the key fact like the DLR fans realized. No one could be like Sammy because he had his own style so now the Sammy fans jumped off the Van Halen band wagon.

Now some nay-sayers to this philosophy of that no man has the same persona would say, "What about cover bands"" Cover bands do not have their own style they copy others styles and do a terrible job at it.

In the USA all men are created equal but were not all equal. We may have equal rights but no man is equal by personality. That's why Van Halen was in turn 3 different bands.
