Why Study History?

Summary:   Discusses the importance of studying history. Describes the role of history in modern society.

When ask the question, "why study history"" one might answer we study history because it's essential to understand the past in order to understand the present. We can learn how events from the past affected us today, and from that we can perceive how the things we do now can affect the future. This way, we could comprehend the world today, its complexity, and why things are the way they are.

One reason why we study history is to see how history repeats itself. We need to learn from our past mistakes. As we examine history we can see the trial and errors humanity has made throughout its existence in this world. From this, we recognize what things wouldn't work if we try it because it already failed in the past. For example, after the Revolutionary War the leaders of America had to create laws for the newly freed country. The Articles of Confederation was formed. But they weren't very effective and many problems arose. So the leaders gathered again, and this time they learn from their mistakes and made better laws call the Bill of Rights.

Another reason as to why we study history is so we could understand other people from other countries. In the real world, we'll have to work in our jobs with other people who are from different ethnic groups with different cultures. It's important to understand their background because it's much easier to cooperate with the people we work with. It's better if we are not ethnocentrism, because that way the working environment would be an enjoyable place to work in, and we'll be able to make more friends that way.

The last reason why we study history is because we have to preserve the events of the past. Without history a country would lose its identity, its culture. History explains the traditions preserved in that country. A person is defined by his history; it explains his religion, his actions, and his background. Many historical literatures contain history, like Shakespeare's plays. When we read one of Shakespeare's plays, we comprehend what kind of traditions existed back then and how people communicated to each other. It also helps us to understand how ideas are developed, modified or even changed. By preserving the plays, we preserve a fragment of history.

Studying history is very important, not only do we gain more knowledge but we also understand the world we live in. Since everything has a history, it helps us to understand people and societies. History is essential in our everyday life because it helps us exceed in school as well as in life.
