7. a. The story takes place in New Orleans in 1814. The British have invaded the United States and are taking people who are British as prisoners. New Orleans is a very hot and humid place in the story. It is also full of pirates and pick-pocketers.

b. Elisabet Holder's father was captured by the British and was taken as a prisoner. She had no other family except for her aunt and uncle who invited her to live with them in New Orleans. She went to live with them. While she was traveling there her uncle died and her aunt's daughter became ill so she went to live and care for her daughter until she was well.
