Annotations, Study Guide for To Kill a Mockingbird

Summary:   Analyzes key quotes from To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Includes annotations, lists character names for each quote.

  1. 1)Pg. 11 "The sheriff hadn't the heart to put him in jail alongside Negroes, so Boo was locked in the courthouse basement." -What does this make Boo sound like? He's basically categorized as an outcast. It also goes to show the town judges people right from the start.
  2. 2)Pg. 13 "Jem said if Dill wanted to get himself killed, all he had to do was go up and knock on the front door" -Obviously he believed Boo would shoot/kill a person. Maybe he has a little fear in him also.
  3. 1)Pg. 16 "Jem was careful to explain that during school hours, I was not to bother him..." -I think this shows Jem is beginning to change. Now he cares about what his friends think. Maybe he is just a different person in school than at home.
  4. 2) Pg. 22"Miss Caroline picked up her ruler, gave me ½ a dozen quick little pats, then told me to stand in the corner." - I think this shows a lot about how this time is so much different than today
  5. 1)Pg. 24 "He ain't company, Cal, he's a Cunningham---" -People were looked down on because of their money or no money just like today. Some things haven't changed.
  6. 2)Pg 27 "They come the first day every year and then leave." -The laws were much different than today again. Also, it shows what type of lifestyle the family lives in
  7. 1)Pg. 39 "He can get out at night when we're all asleep..." -Scout shows more cowardliness since she heard someone in the house.
  8. 2)Page 41 "I had heard another sound, so low I could not have heard it from the sidewalk-someone inside the house was laughing" -this adds suspense and I just liked it.
  9. 1)Pg. 43 "I know he's alive, Jean Louise, because I haven't seen him carried out" -Maudies different than the town people.
  10. 2)Pg. 46 "Atticus Finch is the same in the house as he is on the public streets" Apparently Atticus didn't put on an act in or out of the house.
  11. 1)Pg 51 "Why don't you go on home, Scout"" -Jem is starting to show more of his change.
  12. 2)Pg. 56 "Atticus aint ever whipped me since I can remember, I wanna keep it that way." -Jem cares about Atticus being disappointed in him but will do something if he won't find out.
  13. 1)Pg. 56 "As Atticus had once advised me to do, I tried to climb into Jem's skin and walk around in it..." - Scout is starting to take Atticus' advice and understand people better.
  14. 2)Pg. 62 "Someone had filled our knot-hole with cement. 'Don't you cry, now, Scout...'" -Jem tried to comfort her in his own distress.
  15. 1)Pg. 73 "Always wanted a smaller house" -Maudie shows she is a greatful woman and isn't greedy.
  16. 2)Pg. 74 "Suddenly she put her hands to her head and wooped. When we left her, she was still chuckling." Maudie is amused by Scout's choice of words but doesn't correct her.
  17. 1)Pg. 87 "Children are children but they can spot an evasion quicker than adults and evasium simply meddles 'em." -I think this is really true.
  18. 2)Pg. 88 "I just hope that Jem and Scout come to me for answers instead of listening to the town." Atticus has different perspective than the messed up racist town.
  19. 1)Pg. 96 "Mr Tate almost threw the rifle at Atticus." -This kind of hints that maybe Atticus knows something about shooting.
  20. 2)Pg "Atticus is a gentleman-just like me" Jem looks up to his dad and thinks of himself like him.
  21. 1)Pg. 100 "It was times like these when I thought my father, who hated guns, was the bravest man who ever lived." Scout too, thinks Atticus is wonderful-especially know"
  22. 2)Pg. 112 "It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what." It's like fight even if you have no chance because if you do, you sometimes win.
  23. 1)Pg. 116 "I had never thought about it but summer was Dill by the fishpool smoking string... With him life was a routine, without him, life was unbearable." Scout really cares for Dill and she's starting to realize it.
  24. 2)Pg. 126 "You're not gonna change any of them by talking right. They've gotta want to learn themselves." This quote basically explains itself. You can't force anyone to do anything just for yourself.
  25. 1)Pg. 134 "This was not my father" Atticus' attitude has changed recently and Scout believes it is Aunty's fault.
  26. 2)Page 134 "There was no where to go, but I turned to go and met Atticus' vest front" It's amazing how much Scout doesn't want her father acting like this, she still runs to him though.
  27. 1)Pg. 142 "He just said we would. We never did." Words aren't always promises...
  28. 2)Pg. 144 "Maybe he doesn't have anywhere to run off to" Not everyone does have a place to go. This may be a turn around in attitude towards Boo.
  29. 1)Pg. 153 "The man did not hear me, it seemed" Mr. Cunningham is acting differently on streets than other places.
  30. 2)Pg. 155 "As they passed under a street light, Atticus reached out and massaged Jem's hair, his one gesture of affection." Atticus will always love Jem and Scout. Nothing can change it; even following him and almost ruining his evening.
  31. 1)Pg. 161 "Colored folks won't have 'em because they're half white, white folks won't have 'em because they're colored." This is ridiculous. Why would you not like someone because of his or her looks?
  32. 2)Pg. 163 "'Thinks he knows what he's doing' 'Oh-h now, I wouldn't say that' said another'" Some people stick up for Atticus and others don't want anything to do with him.
  33. 1)Ph. 168 "It was her right eye, Mr. Finch. I remember how, she was bunged up on that side of her face." Earlier wasn't there something about Ewell's not being able to see out of one of there eyes?
  34. 2)Pg. 175 "'Didn't you think she should have a doctor immediately"' The witness said he'd never thought of it." Mr. Ewell basically (if he's telling the truth) doesn't care or think about her condition very much.
  35. 1)Pg. 183 "Who are your friends"? Mayella is obviously a loner.
  36. 2)Pg.

189 "Shall we try to wind up this afternoon"' asked Judge Taylor. 'I think we can.' Said Atticus." Atticus has confidence in what will happen this afternoon.

  37. 1)Pg. 195 "Mr. Finch, If you was a nigger like me, you'd be scared too." Tom Robinson basically say blacks were well aware that they were unliked and not as priveliged as whites. It's weird how he calls himself a 'nigger'.
  38. 2)Pg. 199 "Hasn't anybody got any buisiness talkin' like that--it just makes me sick." Dill. It almost seems if Dill can relate to Tom being talked to like that.
  39. 1)Pg. 204 "The evil assunmption that all Negroes like, that all Negroes are basically immoral, that all Negro men are not to be trusted around our women, an assumption one associates with minds of their caliber" Atticus. This is a very true statement even today. People think blacks are just bad or scary and it's an evil assumption.
  40. 2)Pg. 205 "He was one of those men whose faces never perspired, but now it was shining tan." Why is Atticus sweating now? Is it because he knows now everyone will have worse thoughts about him than before or is he nervous?
  41. 1)Pg. 211 "Miss Jean Louise, stand up. Your father's passin'" The respect is very great from the Negroes.
  42. 2)Pg. 206 "She says my children are missing. Haven't turned up since noon...I... could you" Atticus goes once again to show he cares about his children very much. I think its special.
  43. 1)Pg. 215 "That Judge Taylor might have had his reasons for naming him"" The judge purposely named Atticus because he would actually fight for Tom.
  44. 2)Pg. 216 "We're making a step- it's just a baby step, but it's a step." The jury actually took a while to consider the case. Before, they would just let the white man win.
  45. 1)Pg. 218 "Jem, see if you can stand in Bob Ewell's shoes for a minute." Atticus is once again bringing up standing in other people's shoes and looking at how they see things. He must really believe in this.
  46. 2)Pg. 220 "In our courts, when it's white mans word against a black man's, the white man always wins." Atticus states again, even if a white man is guilty, the jury won't need think two times about convicting the black man.
  47. 1)Pg. 235 "Seventeen bullet holes in him" Tom Robinson was shot more times than necessary just to stop him from climbing the fence and escaping. Maybe the guards were acting unnecessarily cruel"!
  48. 2)"After all, If Aunty could be a lady at a time like this, so could i." Scout is starting to understand (maybe) other people's perspectives. She seems to show a little respect for Alexandria. If Alexandria who can be a real put down can act like a lady, Scout thinks she can.
  49. 1)Pg. 240 "Typical of a nigger to have no plan, no thought for the future..." This is saying blacks are lazy and irresponsible. That is very wrong.
  50. 2)Pg. 240 "Nigger always comes out in em." So what is it talking about? 'Nigger' always comes out? What is that supposed to mean!
  51. 1)Pg. 245 "We are a democracy" Well they aren't acting too much like it!
  52. 2)Pg. 245 "Persecution comes from people who are prejudiced." Then stop being prejudice and do something about it. This Is a very true statement.
  53. 1)Pg. 250 "He had his way in court didn't he"" Atticus is saying Bob unfairly had his way and he should be happy and move on about new things!
  54. 2)Pg. 254 "This began our longest journey together." This shows that something is definitely going to happen. Foreshadow!
  55. 1)Pg. 254 "'Atticus didn't,' Jem said. 'Here's thirty cents;" Atticus is still looking after Scout after all these years.
  56. 2)Pg. 261 "He was running, running, toward us with no child's steps." Now I'm starting to think about whom it could be... Bob Ewell maybe? It gives suspense.
  57. 1)Pg. 267 "'Atticus, I had a feeling about this tonight, I, this is my fault,' She began. 'I should have.'" Aunt Alexandra is starting to show her emotional side?
  58. 2)Pg. 270 "His lips parted into a timid smile, and our neighbors image blurred with my sudden tears. 'Hey Boo,' I said." She is finally meeting Boo and in a weird way. I think it's exciting.
  59. 1)Pg. 272 "Jem never stabbed Bob Ewell" Someone else was there... that's sort of creepy.
  60. 2)Pg. 274 "God damn it, I'm not thinking of Jem!" Atticus is really concerned about Boo. He would be brought into the town picture and that is not what he needs.
