Duke's mother was religious educated and smart. Duke's dad was poor but did whatever he could to keep his family in good health. Duke's sister Ruth lived with him when Duke was a boy. Most of the black children in the United States attended schools that were segregated and inferior to those of white students. Duke and the Washington's opened at the Cotton Club after they left the Cotton Club he became a sensation on the road all of his dreams of stardom and acclaim.
