The migrant workers, especially the Joads, not only have to deal with the shame of being in a place where no one wants them but they also have to deal with not having enough to live. Poverty causes Rosasharn to lose her baby and Jim Casy to get killed. It also causes Tom to have to hide in the woods as a fugitive because of the terrible temper he has and it made him kill someone because of it.
