Summary:   Explains that poverty is the antagonist in "The Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck, as well as its causes and effects.


In "The Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck, poverty is the antagonist. Poverty is the one thing that makes The Joad family act the way they do. The migrant workers, especially the Joads, not only have to deal with the shame of being in a place where no one wants them but they also have to deal with not having enough to live. Poverty causes Rosasharn to lose her baby and Jim Casy to get killed. It also causes Tom to have to hide in the woods as a fugitive because of the terrible temper he has and it made him kill someone because of it. It has caused them to lose the all of their hopes and dreams that they had built up on the way to California. Their family had so much hope to.....
