Summary:   The essay provides a short piece on the boxer rebellion.


Since the Opium Wars, China had been compelled to make numerous concessions to Western powers. The humiliation and economic drain had, by the end of the 19th Century, resulted in an enormous resentment towards the West. At this time, the Chinese government attempted to oust foreign interests by allying itself with the Righteous Fists of Harmony--the Boxers.

The Boxer movement grew and, between 1899 and June 1900, some 140,000 Boxers occupied Beijing, placing siege on Westerners and Chinese Christians there. The siege was lifted in August by an international force of the British, French, Russian, US, German, and Japanese.....
