A balanced racial mix in public housing contributes to social cohesion in Singapore to a large extent. Due to Singapore's multi-racialism, it is vital that Singaporeans learn to live and play together. Thus the government used its housing programme to bring the races together.

When people of different races are put together in the same estate, they tend to mix as they would have to share common facilities e.g. schools, community centres, markets etc. This way, residents would be able to know each other better and thus encourage higher tolerance between different racial groups.

Also, as the standard of living improved, the HDB focused on catering to the middle-income group. Having a mix of small and big flats ensured.....
