The ANZAC Legend was the result of a devastating loss, rather than a great victory, which has had and continues to have an impact on Australia's identity. The legend is a framework of traits and characteristics of the typical ANZAC. The experiences on the Gallipoli peninsula formed the characteristics that formed the image of the "True Australian." ANZAC troops spirit of mateship, courage, loyalty, bravery, sacrifice, heroism, dedication, honour, integrity, initiative and determination throughout the Gallipoli campaign as the battled against the daunting odds. Australians could also be recognised by their common sense, their willingness to endure hardships, their resourcefulness, their spirit of independence. The ANZAC Legend is not an accurate assessment of all the ANZAC soldiers as many things were changed because they did not fit the stereotypical ANZAC image.
