Through Our Life in "Our Town"

Summary:   Essay discuses Thornton Wilder's play "Our Town", fitting symbolism to the American dream.


Thornton Wilder uses many types of symbolism to show the American Dream. Wilder uses Shakespeare as an allusion in this play. He uses one main metaphor, in the hymn "Blessed Be The Tie That Binds." A more national allusion is to the Constitution of the United States and the Bible. Look around yourself, you will never know how many things repeat themselves.

Shakespeare is seen in this play. His plays are incorporated into Wilder's because it shows how plays have evolved and changed since Shakespeare's time. The love story of Romeo and Juliet can relate to that of George and Emily. Death intercedes in both stories. "We're putting in a copy of William Shakespeare's plays." This quote proves that the people of Grover's Corners have an appreciation for poetry.
