Summary: Our society today versus that of the society in the novel "1984" written by George Orwell.
Imagine living in a world where every aspect of life is controlled by a group of complete strangers. Life is completely devoid of privacy, every minute of every day is spent trying to please a ruler that may not even exist. One must live with the knowledge that at any minute they, or someone they know may vanish, all traces of existence erased. Winston Smith lived in this world, a world that George Orwell created, a world where society was ruled by an elite few who used oppression and totalitarianism to control its people. In writing 1984, Orwell was perhaps trying to warn us that totalitarian governments were not only dangerous but would eventually threaten many countries around the world.
