Don Miguel Ruiz was born and raised in a rural part of Mexico. His mother was a healer and his grandfather was a shaman. His family expected him to become a healer and carry on the Toltec knowledge, but he decided to go to medical school and become a surgeon. One day, a near death experience completely changed him. In a car accident in the 1970's, he saw his body from an outside view. "I say that I existed separate from my body. So I asked myself, if I am not this body, what am I"" He started to learn the Toltec wisdom from his mother-Sarita, a shaman in the Mexican desert, and from his dead grandfather in his dreams.
