Is Eating Meat a Blessing or a Plague?

Summary: Essay presents the virtues of becoming a vegetarian.
Most Americans have been raised eating meat, and have had no real chance to object to doing so. Yet today there are nearly twenty million Americans who are vegetarians. Even our evolutionary ancestors and closest historical relatives were vegetarians. Vegetarianism is not only a beneficial diet for the body, but has been proven to prevent a variety of diseases. Notwithstanding that, the sheer moral dilemmas directly correlated with eating meat are overwhelming. How can we as humans, stand by and watch millions upon millions of animals, be fed growth supplements, antibiotics, and other "productive chemicals," only to be slaughtered six years of birth? What is America's true problem? Is it that our morals and standards of health have simply diminished, or could it be that we, as a race, are addicted to meat? Becoming a vegetarian saves the lives of countless animals, not to mention your own.
