Africa was a huge continent. I had hundreds upon hundreds of tribes that spoke different languages and had different customs and values. Tribal wars were common in this pre-imperialized land. It took a very long time for Africa to come under European control. One reason for this was the difficulty of navigating the continent's diverse terrain. Rivers could not be travelled on, and African diseases also prevented European colonization. The new inventions of the industrial revolution, however, changed this. Now Europeans had steamboats to travel up rivers, treatments for African diseases, and also an important military invention, the Maxim gun. These new new weapons trampled African resistance to European colonization. The Africans' out-dated rifles and primal weapons were useless against the newly invented machine gun. European imperialism had its positive effects and its negative effects. On the somewhat positive side, it brought Christianity and Western civilization to Africa...
