Sarah and Abe Shapiro yearned for a child for years before being able to have one. Both came from large Jewish families that put great emphasis on parental involvement with children and on family activities such as playing sports, eating nightly meals, and going on long camping trips. Sarah and Abe also inherited something else from their families. Tay-Sachs disease runs in Jewish families of Eastern European origin. It is a lethal genetic disease that produces children who always die before they become teenagers. Knowing their risk, Sarah and Abe used in vitro fertilization (IVF) so that any embryo implanted in Sarah could be screened for Tay-Sachs. In IVF, three embryos are often implanted in hopes that one will successfully gestate. Such was the way Michael was created.
