"The Chrysalids" involves mutation, which in turn proves that this novel is science fiction. In mutation, there are three categories, human, animal and plant. Under the human category, lies Sophie. Sophie is placed under the human category, because she has six toes. Sophie's six toes are considered to be a mutation, because all normal humans do not have six toes, but five. Under the animal category lie the giant horses, and the cats with no tails. The giant horses are considered to be a mutation because they are larger than any other normal horse.
