Summary:   Essay examines how metaphors create meaning.


Extended metaphors, symbols and images are used to achieve particular effects in poems and in T.S Eliot's poems; metaphors, symbols, and images are used in order to create meaning for the reader. The poem "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" (hereafter Prufrock) and "Portrait of a Lady" (hereafter Portrait) are both poems that often deal with souls tortured souls who have reached psychological impasse and from whom life has been withheld. The fragmented imagery used in Eliot's poems reflects the fragmented nature of life as Eliot saw it. In fact, many of the metaphors, symbols, and images can be associated to Eliot himself. Many of these extended symbols used in his poetry, span through several poems. The meaning of emotional inaction is portrayed in "Prufrock" and "Portrait" whilst the meaning of a bleak and unexciting.....
