The book, I Heard the Owl Call my Name is primarily about the conflict between the natives and the European descendents, and how they have affected each other. It also illustrates how cruel nature can be sometimes, and how it can be such a big part of our life, the natives' life and the wild life all around us.

Nature lets all the "swimmers" die at the end of their trip, with no exceptions. It kills people whether they fight it or not. We see that nature is not always very forgiving. Sometimes, summers are hot, and winters are cold, winds are strong and destructive, and yet we all find a way to cope with it.
