Finding the Balancing Point between the Houyhnhnms and the Yahoos

Summary:   Examines the characteristics that make a good person, some from the yahoos, and some from the houyhnhnms.


Between the houyhnhnms and the Yahoos lies a perfect medium of characteristics that all humans should acquire. This is seen through the form of a satire in Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels. A satire is a form of literature that attempts to sway peoples beliefs and offer hope for change. At a first glance at this piece of literature, one may think it is simply an odd story, but one must look at it as an allegorical story and see the true meaning of this piece of literature. The fourth book, "A Voyage to the Houyhnhnms" is an attempt to satirize people that lived during that time. Swift accomplishes this goal by allegorically speaking of romanticism and rationalism, "shocks of recognition", and irony to show that one must balance the equation by using a perfect medium of.....
