Venus was a roman goddess who was worshipped for fertility, for humans and the garden. She is called Venus by the Romans and Aphrodite by the Greek. Aphrodite holds great power over both mortals and immortals. She is featured in numerous myths, poems, and plays. There are many portrayals of Aphrodite in Greek sculpture and vase painting. There are several legends of Aphrodite emphasize themes of love and desire, some myths that deal with the consequences that the goddess herself endures as a outcome of being in love.

There are many versions of the birth of Aphrodite. According to Homer (Iliad, Book V, 370), the goddess is the daughter of Zeus and Dione. Hesiod (Theogony, 188-198) claims that the name Aphrodite is derived from aphros or foam, and that she was born of this substance.
