Sophocles develops a dramatic work in which a protagonist is occupied in a morally important struggle, which results in ruin because of some extreme quality. One of his greatest works, Antigone, is an outstanding poetic drama. In the dramatic work, a Sophoclean theme prevails, which deals with the pain and suffering caused when an individual, stubbornly defies the fate set by the gods? and then refuses to yield to destiny and circumstance. Instead, the character obeys their inner compulsion that leads to unbearable disclosure and, ultimately, to a mysterious vindication of that person's behavior and life.
