II. Main Characters: Bilbo, Gandolf, and Thorin

Hobbits are man like creatures that are known for their hairy feet, for example the main character Bilbo. Although they have human characteristics, but they are only half as tall and big. Bilbo is very shy and unconfident in the beginning, but as the novel progresses he over comes his fears. Bilbo loves food, drinks, and smoking his pipe in his comfortable chair.

Gandolf is a powerful wizard who is almost three times taller than Bilbo. Gandolf wears a large pointy hat like all other wizards and has an extremely long white beard. His role in the story is to help Bilbo and Thorin along their journey to get back the lost treasure from a dragon. Gandolf is the brain of the group; he knows everything about almost anything.
