The Evils of Imperialism in "Heart of Darkness"

Summary:   Essay discusses the evils of imperialism in Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness."


In many countries the greed for expansion has corrupted the society and has caused un-civil exploitation. Imperialism is the extension of one's nation by means of power or money. The Heart of Darkness, written by Joseph Conrad, portrays the corruption of our society through imperialism. This evil can be shown by the exploitations in Congo by King Leopold, The Opium War, The Sepoy Mutiny, and through the essay: "Shooting an Elephant."

The evils of imperialism can be shown by King Leopold in Congo. King Leopold used slave labor and other forms of torture to increase the collection of ivory and rubber to extend his nation. In the article it states:
