Responsibility of Car Theft

Summary:   This essay talks about a new state court decision in New Mexico about how owners of unlocked vehicles that are stolen can be held responsible.


The article states that leaving a car unlocked with the keys in the ignition invites car theft; in result, stolen cars are 200 times more likely to be involved in an accident increasing the risk of injury or even leading to death. The overall question of who is responsible for all factors in a car theft case, including the injuring of others, was presented in a 1996 court case. This case involved a car owner who dropped his car off for servicing at Quality Pontiac and was told to leave the keys in the car. A thief entered and stole the unlocked car.
