Imperialism
Imperialism is defined as the policy of seeking to extend the power, dominion, or territories of a nation. Imperialism occurred through out Europe in the late 1800's. At the beginning of the 1800's the Western powers controlled about 35% of all land surface, and by 1914 they controlled 84%. This imperialism had both positive and negative effects on the colony and the colonizer. The British imperialism in India was mostly positive. One of the positive effects for the British was that they received raw materials, such as tea, indigo, coffee, and cotton. They also got a reputation as one of the stronger nations in Europe and their economy improved. Some positive effects that Britain had on India was that they built the railway to help make their economy more modern, Britain made improvements for them, such as telephone lines, dams, bridges, and canals....
