Dante Vs. Montaigne

Summary: Essay compares and contrasts the literature of both authors.
The Medieval and Renaissance time periods were rather different from each other. Although the public had many conflicting opinions, both time periods produced extremely talented writers. The author, Dante Alighieri, reveals medieval ideas through his literary master piece, The Divine Comedy. In later years the author Michel de Montaigne did the same, and put many of his ideas of the Renaissance, in a collection of writings know as The Essays. Both men are the epitome of their time periods.

During the medieval time period all life revolved around faith, and religion in general. As Martin Luther wrote in his piece, A Mighty Fortress Is Our God:

"A mighty fortress is our God,

A bulwark never failing,

Our helper he, amid the flood

Of mortal ill prevailing;

For still our ancient foe

Doth seek to work us woe,

His craft and power are great,

And armed with cruel hate...
