Summary: Desrcribes Canadian viewpoint on whether the government should be able to choose health or religion.
Consider the situation where a person that is of legal age is injured. This person requires the best assistance that medical science has to offer in order to save a life, but refuses. It is their choice, affecting their lives, and not the government's or the healthcare system to decide. If this person is of sound mind they have the right to make their own decision. This position is supported by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (the Charter), which states under fundamental freedoms that everyone has the right to conscience and religion. Because of this, many will argue that it is their choice to follow their religious beliefs no matter what the outcome. Many Jehovah's Witnesses refuse to take blood transfusions, since it is against their religion to take any other persons blood into their body.
