Elie Wiensel, the narrorator, is 12 years old. It is 1941. He grew up in the town of Sight. Sight is in Transylvania. Elie is a very religious kid. One day Elie is praying in the temple, then Moshe the Beadle, the caretaker of the temple, asks Elie why is he praying. Elie replies that he doesn't know. After that Moshe the Beadle teaches Elie about the mysteries of G-d. Elie wants to learn about Cabbala, even though he is too young. In 1942 all foreign Jews, including the Moshe the Beadle, were taken out of Sight. Later one day, Moshe the Beadle came back to Sight, to tell everyone about his horrifying story. He told everyone to prepare, but nobody believed him. After a while, Jews become confidant that the War is soon over. Then on the 7th day of Passover, the Germans came into Sight. They set a curfew for the Jews, and made them wear yellow stars.
One night (where the book gets it name), all the Jews were deported. They were stuffed into a cattle wagon. The Germans demanded to give up all their valuables. One the trip, a woman starts screaming that she can see a fire. People try to calm her down, but then it results into the Germans hitting her to calm down. The Jews found out they are in Auschwitz. The Germans told them that the families wont be separated. The woman starts screaming that she is seeing fire. When the train pulled in, the Jews saw flames, and smelt burning flesh.
When the Jews got off the train, they were separated. Men were sent to the left and Woman to the right. When the new arrivals enter, a veteran prisoner tells Elie and Chlomo, Elie's dad, to fake about their age to stay together. Another prisoner points at the flames in the chimney, and says that's their grave. Dr. Mengele, an officer, sorts out who can work and can't. Elie stays with his father. As they march to the barracks, they see babies being thrown into the fire. Elie and his father start reciting the Kaddish. Elie feels mad at G-d and wants to jump in the flames. The arrivals took a shower, went to the barber, and got work clothes. A officer tells everyone that they should remember that they are in Auschwitz and warns them that people who cant work, will be sent to their death.
In the march to work, Elie sees a white sign saying "Warning: Danger of Death."
Elie refuses his soup, even though he is hungry, so his dad eats the soup. After the meal, the prisoners got their identification numbers. Ellie is A-7713. One day Elie and his father see a relative of theirs. He asks Elie if he knows anything about his wife and children. He lied saying he heard them. He brings Elie extra rations of bread. One day he finds out the real truth about his family, and Elie doesn't hear of him anymore.
Elie and His father were taken to the Orchestra block. Juliek, a violinist, tells Elie and his father that they are lucky because they are working with electrical equipment and that's not hard. He warns them about Idek, an overseer. Elie makes 2 friends, Yossi and Tiba. They were talking about going to Palestine. Franek, the foreman of the group, torments Elie's father, for Elie's gold crown. Elie goes to the dentist, and was commanded to come later. On the 2nd visit he finds out that the dentist was hanged for doing business with gold teeth. He was glad that he saved his tooth. Idek beats Elie for no reason. A young French girl wipes Elie's bloody lips and slips a piece of bread in his mouth. Elie recalls meeting her in Paris, and they share pass experiences. Idek beats Elie's father with a iron bar. Elie gets mad at his father, not a Idek, because his father didn't block the hits. Elie ends up giving up his gold crown to Franek. Elie doesn't get anything for it. One Sunday the unit has no work, but they are ordered to be in the warehouse. Elie walks into Idek with a girl and bursts out laughing. He got 25 whips and fainted. There was a air-raid attack. The next week, they saw a hanging kid from Warsaw. There were many hangings.
It is New Years and all the Jews were celebrating and thanking G-d. Elie refused to pray or thank G-d. Elie goes to find his father. Then he takes his father's hand and kisses it. A tear falls on his hand, and Elie asks if that was his or his father's, but they were silent. Elie was seperted from his father to another unit. He has to hold heavy stones for 12 hours each day. Elie is scared that his father or him will be selected for death. Then he finds out neither his father or him were selected. Then they passed the 2nd one also. Elie and the Jews had to evacuate Buna.
During the march, the officers would shoot anyone who can not keep up. A polish man got a stomach ache and was shot. Rabii Elihou asks Elie if he has seen his son, but Elie hasn't. As the rabbi leaves, Elie suddenly remembers his son running ahead of him. Elie thinks he shouldn't tell Rabbi Elihou. They start marching again after their rest. The survivors march just a few more hours. Then they reached Gleiwitz. All of them were cluttered into one barrack. Then Elie hears Juliek's violin. The next day when Elie got up he saw Juliek dead and his violin crushed. The Jews were forced to March again, because the Russian army, attacked the Nazis. There was another selection, which Elie's father was chosen. Some how Elie's father sneaked to the other side and caused confusion.
The dead men, were thrown out of the train. While Elie's father was sleeping, 2 prisinors tried to throw him out, but Elie convinced them that he is alive. A nazi throws a piece of bread into the train and everyone shoved to get it. Elie witnessed a boy kill his father for a piece of bread, but after he east the bread he was killed also. Elie was now 15 years old. Someone tried to strangle Elie, but his father calls a friend to save him. Finally the train reaches Buchenwald. Only 12 Jews survived the trip including Elie and his father.
Elie's father says he wants to give up, but Elie says to keep hope. Elie's father goes to see a doctor and has a big disease. The doctor says it it useless and he cant do anything. Elie woke up and his father wasn't there, they took him already.
American tanks arrived around 6:00 pm one evening. The first thing the free Jews do was go for the bread. Elie hasn't seen himself since he was in the ghetto, and he startes at his unrecognizable face.
