Sachar was born March 20th in East Meadow, New York. When he was nine he and his parents moved to Tustin, California. He graduated from the University of California at Berkley in 1976 as an economics' major. While attending college he went to work at an elementary school where he was asked to be the "Noon Time Supervisor" to watch over the kids during lunch.
