West Side Story Essay

Summary:   Essay briefly discusses the West Side Story.

Chino did pull the trigger and killed Tony, but he is not the only person responsible for Tony's death. Chino was simply seeking revenge for the death of his good friend and gang leader Bernardo. Bernardo had previously killed Riff which led Tony to kill Bernardo. So who is really guilty"

One possibility of who is guilty for Tony's death is Tony himself. He should not have gone to the rumble because for one he was not a Jet anymore, nor was he a Shark. He went there because Maria wanted him to stop the fight but he should not have gone anyway. Another reason why Tony could be responsible for his own death is he killed Bernardo after Bernardo killed Riff. He was not a Jet anymore so he should not be fighting on either side of the two gangs. One more reason Tony is guilty is because after Anita lied to Doc about Maria being dead, he got all fired up and started yelling for Chino out in the streets. This was just a stupid thing to do because he is like a free range chicken just sitting out their waiting to be killed.

Two more people who are technically guilty for Tony's death are Anita and Maria. Maria made it to obvious that she had a relationship with Tony. Maria was just showing how much she loved Tony by only asking if Tony was alive when Tony had killed Bernardo. This is one of the things that fired up Chino to kill Tony. Anita is also guilty for Tony's death by lying to Doc that Maria was

killed by Chino. This lead to Doc telling Tony and then Tony just ran out in the streets yelling for Chino.

The two gangs, Sharks and Jets, are both to blame for Tony's death. Both gangs disobeyed the fair fight rule by bringing weapons in which they were not supposed to. These weapons were knives. The Sharks had drawn their weapons first. The person who is most to blame from the two gangs for Tony's death is Bernardo. Bernardo is the one who stabbed Riff. He is also the first person to draw a weapon. Chino is a little guilty though because he had got revenge on Tony and killed him unfairly with a gun.

Two more groups of people who are also to blame for the death of Tony are authority and the gang's parents. The authority put effort in stopping the gangs from fighting but not enough. They should have tried harder to find the location of the rumble to stop it so no one got hurt. The parents never did anything or were never there for their children. They just let them do what they wanted to do.

All in all, there is no one person guilty for Tony's death. Everyone played a contribution to Tony's death. Chino is a little guilty but none of this would have happened if one of these events did not occur. Every person played a role, whether a big one or small one in Tony's death.
