Summary:   Essay consists of a discussion regarding Chinese superstition.


In "Scar" (p.39-40), the superstition is about An-meis'mother who made soup containing her own flesh for Popo to drink so that she might be cured. I think it is not worth trusting, but the Chinese always believed that this was a sign of the deepest respect that a daughter could show to her mother, since they were of the same flesh.

In "The Red Candle"(p.51-52), the superstition is that the marriage bond held by the candle is unbreakable. Marriage is symbolized by a red candle with two ends which represent the marrying couple. The candle burned continuously at both ends implies that a marriage can never be broken. Another superstition is that the best marriage combination is made according to the couples' birth years (Chinese Zodiacs). For example, "An earth horse for an earth sheep"(p.42). Lindo's.....
