John Donne

Summary:   Brief essay concerning the life of John Donne and his poetic works.


John Donne lived a life filled with love, pain, and above all; his words. Donne was one of the first to use his words to express feelings toward life, love, and questions. Donne was also a priest, although he was more noted for his outstanding poetry. Since Donne was one of the first men to change his writing style to allow the reader to see a new perspective by using paradoxes, subtle arguments, inventive syntax, and imagery from art, philosophy, and religion by using conceit, a type of metaphor. Yet Donne was not the only man in this group, later named the Metaphysical Poets or Intellectual poets, by Samuel Johnson, a philosopher.
