How Priestley's Inspector Exposes Weaknesses and Wickedness.

Summary: Discusses the play, An Inspector Calls, by Priestley. Describes how the characters in the story all represent the weaknesses and wickedness of their time period, early 20th century. Explores how Priestley uses the Inspector to out his own views on this in hope that people will change.
The play was first performed in 1945 but was set in 1912's.Priestley the author sets the play in 1912 so that he can look back with hindsight to expose the wrongs of that age and his own age. The play is based on lies and deceit and trying to get the upper classers to be responsible. The characters all represent the weaknesses and wickedness of the time, as they all lie and are partly responsible for Eva's death and what happened to her. Priestly therefore thinks that society in 1912 was wicked and his using his play to try to get the upper classes to be more responsible for the lower classes.

The play uses the characters to show the different rungs of the social hierarchy. Arthur Birling and his family are at the top of the different classes and Eva stands for all the people in the lowest class...
